The first Ashram Branch of Santhigiri was established by Navajyothi Sree Karunakara Guru at Pattom Colony at Kallar in Idukki district. Guru set up a prayer hall and a ‘Darsana Mandiram’ (Guru’s Abode) on the full moon day in April, 1971. Devotees visiting the Ashram have several experiences of Grace.
The Santhigiri Ashram, Kallar Branch is located at a very scenic place called Thookkupalam. The land for the ashram branch was prayerfully submitted by a disciple who was with Guru from the time that Guru was at the Sivagiri Math, Varkala.
Guru gave the directions for the design of the ‘Prarthanalayam’ (Prayer Hall). Guru visited Kallar when the ashram branch was being constructed and decided to stay there to expedite the work. Guru also participated in the construction of the ashram branch. On April 23, 1971, the ‘Prathishta’ (consecration) of the ‘Prarthanalayam’ was done by Guru. This ashram branch possesses the eternal glory of being the one and only ashram branch constructed by the Holy Hands of Guru.
This is also the only ashram branch blessed by ‘aradhana’ (prayers) to Guru when He was present in body.
The Santhigiri Ashram, Kallar Branch is also special as Gurusthaneeya Sishyapoojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini was born at Kallar. This ashram branch was the place for the first meeting between Guru and His foremost disciple, in 1972.
As this ashram branch is located near the border with Tamil Nadu, many devotees from this state also visit this ashram branch for praying. In a remarkable coincidence, a village named ‘Karunapuram’ is located near Santhigiri Ashram, Kallar Branch. The ashram complex is spread over about 25 acres.
‘Janasammatham Pappad’, manufactured by Santhigiri Pappad, Thookkupalam, which is very popular in the eastern belt of Kerala and is also being exported, is operated under the aegis of Santhigiri Ashram, Kallar Branch. The Santhigiri Ayurveda & Siddha Hospital started functioning under this Ashram in 2001, integrating Allopathic, Ayurveda, Siddha and Homoeopathic systems of medicine. A coir manufacturing unit is functioning near ‘Guruvinte Veedu’, where Sishyapoojitha spent her childhood days. A number of agricultural items, including coconut, plantains, pepper, cardamom, vanilla and tubers, are grown on the Ashram land. There is also a small dairy operation.
