History of Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery

The Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery branch, was established in 1977 with humble beginnings under the inspiration and guidance of NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU, who is the Founder Guru of Santhigiri Ashram. The ashram was founded based on Guru's holistic philosophy of Annadanam (providing food), Athurasevanam (serving the sick), and Athmabodhanam (spiritual enlightenment).

Initially, the Ashram started in a a piece of land donated by a devotee and follower of Guru named Mr.Parameshwaran who is no more. As per the instruction of Guru Mr.Parameshwaran alongwith Mr. K.K. Thomas who was also known as Kunjachan Swami went to Nambiarkunnu to build a facility for the stay of Guru. Mr. Mohammed Gurukkal who was residing near the plot allowed them to stay in his home. Mr. Parameshwaran, Mr. K.K. Thomas and Mr. Kunjani S/o Mr. Mohammed Gurukkal built a thatched hut in the plot for Guru’s stay. Later in the same year Guru visited the place and stayed in the hut and lit the lamp. Thus began the humble beginning of Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery Branch.

Over time, the Ashram grew, and in the year 1980, Aradhana (pooja) and Kumbhamela ceremonies began. Later, on 21st January 2000, the foundation stone for a new prayer hall and Parnasala was laid by HH SHISHYAPOOJITHA AMRITHA JNANA THAPASWINI, the Guru Apparent of Santhigiri Ashram. After completing the construction, the new prayer hall was opened for worship to all humanity on 5th June 2005. The 'Pratista Poorthikaranam' (Consecration Completion Ceremony) at the prayer hall was conducted on 5th April 2023, by HH SHISHYAPOOJITHA AMRITHA JNANA THAPASWINI. Since then, Aradhana is performed thrice, a day and also Deepa Pradikshananam, on all Pournami days.

Currently, the Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery Branch, is dedicated to people from all walks of life, who wish to practice the spiritual teachings of NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU. Under the guidance of Guru's monastic disciples, the Ashram welcomes hundreds of household devotees and general visitors from various backgrounds every day, seeking spiritual growth and inner peace.

Guru’s Visits

NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU, the Founder Guru of Santhigiri Ashram, visited and stayed at the Sulthan Bathery Branch multiple times. His first visit to the Ashram was on 14th November 1978, accompanied by some disciples. The ashram has preserved the small hut where Guru stayed during his visits, and it is now known as 'Aadiparnasala.' This preservation has been done meticulously, maintaining the hut in its original form without any alterations. Additionally, there is another small hut adjacent to Aadiparnasala, which was used as a prayer hall, and it too has been preserved in its original state.

'Aadiparnasala' serves as a serene and tranquil place where people can spend some peaceful time away from their busy schedules. The Ashram's preservation of these historical structures allows visitors to connect with the spiritual legacy of NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU and experience the same surroundings that he once inhabited. For those seeking solace and introspection, 'Aadiparnasala' offers an opportunity to retreat from the demands of daily life and find inner peace amidst the spiritual atmosphere of the Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery Branch.

Activities of Ashram

*Agriculture

Lush paddy fields swaying in the breeze, once a common sight, have all but vanished from the state’s landscape as agriculture has been given up due to scarce labour and the diversion of land for commercial and residential use. It was on Guru’s directions that the Ashram launched a drive in Kerala a few years ago to initiate an ‘agricultural renaissance’. Traditional cultivation methods and native paddy varieties, becoming extinct, are being revived to conserve bio-diversity and to restore a healthy agro-based environment. Santhigiri Ashram, Sulthan Bathery Branch has initiated Herbal tea plantations which are nature friendly and promotes healthcare in its medical dimensions.

Herbal Garden, Dairy Farm, Bee Keeping, Horticulture, Floriculture are among the other major activities of the Agriculture Department.
