History of Santhigiri Ashram, Vaikom

Santhigiri Ashram, VAIKOM had its humble beginnings, owes its inception to the inspiration and guidance of NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARA GURU, the founder of Santhigiri Ashram.

In 1973, Guru made his maiden visit to VAIKOM , at a time when neither a Santhigiri devotee nor their family lives there. Upon the very soil of VAIKOM , within the realm of spirituality, Guru laid the cornerstone to an act of bestowing moksha to the revered soul who ascended to the exalted sixth state of spiritual realization.

In the 1980s, Madathil Ramachandra Sharma and his spouse Sushila of Thalayolaparambu met Guru for the first time. Gurudarshanam was at Tammanam, in relation to the house warming ceremony of Sri Balan. (Presently- Swami Vishvabodha Jnana Thapaswi). Putthan Purakkal Rajappan and Vaikaprayar Kochu Panayil Soman (Soman Vechur), employers of Vaikom Forest Department also became devotees.

In 1993, the campaign on Santhigiri Ashram , under the leadership of Uttaman (Presently – Swami Snehathma Jnana Thapaswi), Vijayan Macheri, Raviramananmar, Anil Cherthala and so on ignited a new chapter. The establishment of the first unit of Santhigiri Viswa Samskarika Navodhana Kendram at Vaikaprayar marked a significant milestone. In 1997, 4 cents of land were dedicated to the Guru by Soman Kotaker.

VAIKOM holds a special place in the narrative of Sree Narayana Guru’s reformist endeavours. Long before he was embraced as Yogivaryan, Sree Narayana Guru traversed Vaikom during his Avaduth period.

On 21st April, VAIKOM welcomed Navajyothi Sreekarunakara Guru with open arms during Guru’s visit to the Santhigiri Ashram, Palarivattom Branch, Ernakulam, with devotees from various districts gathering to extend their warm reception. Amidst the travel, Guru visited Udayanapuram. Coincidently, the very Manchira in Nakkam Thurth became the place where the foundation of Santhigiri Ashram in VAIKOM was founded, where dream and destiny found their profound alignment.

Devotees pooled their aspirations, acquiring 16 cents of land adjacent to the 4 cents where Guru ignited the lamb. The dream of an ashram in VAIKOM unfolded there.

In December 2008, as part of a pilgrimage, Abhivandya Sishya Poojitha Amritha Jnana Thapaswini arrived in Vaikom from Chandiroor. During Her visit Abhivandhya Shishyapoojitha and group of devotees visited VAIKOM Mahadeva temple. Beneath the Koovala tree in the north-west courtyard, Abhivandhya Shishyapoojitha recited the akhandanama and repeated the sankalpa three times, accompanied by the chanting of Gurugeetha. The visit marked the fulfilment of the Guru’s long-awaited Sankalpa, a significant endeavour that had been anticipated on the grounds of Vaikom for generations.

In an ambience of fervent prayer, on 21st April, the maiden prayer center of Santhigiri Ashram, VAIKOM was dedicated to the nation at 12:00 PM by the then Organizing Secretary Swami Gururethnam Jnana Thapaswi. Aradhana is performed thrice a day and also Deepa Pradakshinanam, on all Pournami days.
